Week 5 - Goals At A Premium This Afternoon...

Before the largest and most enthusiastic crowd so far only four goals were scored in this afternoon’s New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament action.

Team St Lucia (0) vs (0) Team Panama

#10 James Shervon, (St Lucia), & #14 Rolando Deleon (Panama)

Former champions Team St. Lucia had their hands full against Team Panama this afternoon, and with a little luck Los Canaleros may well have come away with three points. But Chad Amari Phillip was on top of his game and formed an impenetrable wall across the St. Lucian goal.

For much of the first half both teams attacked and counter attacked but seemed to lack purpose and the score was locked at zero when the whistle sounded to end the half.

Kicking toward the Flatlands Avenue goal in the second half Team Panama looked more purposeful in attack and when their attacks didn’t break down just outside the eighteen yard box they had to contend with Chad Amari Phillip or they shot wide of the posts or over the cross bar.

While Team St. Lucia seemed to lack mid-season form, Team Panama showed they will be a team to contend with this season and any team that has playoff intentions in the Western Zone will have to go through them.

Team Antigua & Barbuda (0) vs (0) Team Grenada

#5 Dave Carr (Antigua & Barbuda) & #12 Kevin Wellington (Grenada)

Game two between Eastern Zone leaders Antigua & Barbuda and Grenada ended in another 0-0 stalemate. But stale it wasn’t, as both teams played hard-nosed football.

From the opening whistle it was all out attack by Team Antigua & Barbuda and Team Grenada didn’t seem to settle down until after the break.

While there was end to end action in the second half, the game was played between the eighteen yard boxes as neither team was able to break into the opposing areas. At the final whistle the points were shared.

Team Jamaica (4) vs (0) Team Guyana

#10 Jermaine Hue (Jamaica) & #12 Marlon Benjamin (Guyana)

The final game of the afternoon saw defending champions Team Jamaica coming away with a 4-0 win over Team Guyana.

This was Team Jamaica’s third game of the season and for the first time looked like the team we’ve become accustomed to seeing.

In the 25th minute Jermaine Hue picked out Jermaine Christian on the left side and he dribbled past his marker and drove the ball home to open the scoring.

Shortly after these Reggae Boyz could have doubled the score but for hesitant shooting. Anyway, with the clock ticking toward halftime a buildup on the right side that saw Zane Goulbourne pass to Allan Maragh, who picked out Jermaine Hue for the clinical finish. Jamica 2 Grenada 0 as the whistle sounded to end the half.

Team Grenada just never seemed to find their stride this afternoon and it was soon Jamaica 3 Grenada 0 as 5 minutes into the second stanza maestro Jermaine Hue found Miguel Ricketts who tapped home from close in.

Shortly after, it was Jermaine Christian who turned back the ball to Danny Shaw who hit a scorcher giving goalkeeper Richard Reynold no chance.

Following the 4th goal the New York Reggae Boyz took their foot off the throttle to the delight of the largest Caribbean Cup crowd this season.
