Team Trinidad and Tobago USA, also known as ‘Soca Ballers’, is returning for another riveting New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament. It was no surprise to see them qualify for the 2015 playoff as coach Tony Henry infused a positive, disciplined approach with his squad. While they lost their playoff game to eventual finalist Team Haiti USA 2-1, this was their first march into the playoffs in years, and their 2015 performance was very encouraging and augers well for their 2016 campaign.

A little about the country
The Twin Island Republic is made up of Trinidad and Tobago and is an archipelagic state lying just off the coast of northeastern Venezuela and south of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles. The islands cover 1,980 square miles with Port of Spain the capital.

Trinidad and Tobago is the birthplace of calypso music and the steelpan acclaimed to be the only acoustical musical instrument invented in the 20th century. Perhaps their greatest exponent of calypso and steelpan was one Aldwin Roberts, known as Lord Kitchener on stage.

From its Carnival, “the greatest show on Earth” to Diwali “the festival of lights”, the twin island republic is a celebration of multiculturalism.

While such luminaries as Geoffrey Holder, Billy Ocean and Nicki Minaj are from the twin island, they also hold the distinction of being the smallest country to have two Miss Universe titleholders in Janelle Commissiong in 1977 and Wendy   Fitzwilliam in 1998.

Trinidadians and Tobagonians have distinguished themselves in the world of sports over the years. In 1979 they won the World Netball championship and remain the only Caribbean Country to hold that honour. It is the home of their greatest cricketer and world record holder for most test runs and most first class runs in a single innings, one Brian Charles Lara. He is the only man to score 400 runs in a single test innings and over 500 runs in a single first class match.

In 1976 Hasley Crawford put TNT on the map by winning the 100 metres at the Montreal Olympic Games. In 2012, Keshorn Walcott gave them their second individual Olympic Gold medal when he won the javelin in London.

They have been one of top soccer playing countries in the Caribbean and in 2006 remain only the second English speaking Caribbean country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
