Team Panama USA was established in May of 2011.
After promising so much in their initial entry into the New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament in 2012 the performances of Team Panama USA has deteriorated gradually to the point of their failing to make the playoffs in the last two championship seasons. But 2016 is a mile stone year in the tournament, the 25th Anniversary, so one may expect a much more competitive Team Panama USA this year.
Alittle about the Country:
Team Panama USA is the only non-Caribbean Football Union team participating in the New York Caribbean Cup tournament. Panama is situated on the Isthmus connecting North and South America and are bordered by Costa Rica, Colombia, the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Panama was widely settled by the Chibchan, Chocoan and Cueva peoples.
In 1821 Panama broke with Spain and joined a union with Nueva Granada, Ecuador and Venezuela, named the Republic of Gran Colombia. That union dissolved in 1831 leaving Panama and Nueva Granada joined. Panama ceded from that union in 1903 allowing the Panama Canal to be built by the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers.
Boxing and football are big in Panama, but because of the U.S. influence, baseball is their national sport. They have produced such outstanding players Rod Carew and arguably the best closer in baseball history, Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees.
While they have produced several world boxing champions, Roberto Duran, dubbed “the hands of stone” was probably their most popular and greatest champion.
Soccer has played second fiddle to baseball and boxing over the years but recently football/soccer appears to be on the rise and the Canaleros have become one of the more formidable teams in the Concacaf zone.
