For the first time in the twenty four year history of the New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament Team Haiti USA made it to the final in 2015 before being defeated 3-2 on Penalty Shoot-Out by Team Jamaica USA. Team Haiti has always been one of the more formidable teams in the tournament who defend well but have a penchant for playing attacking football.

Alittle about our Country:

Officially the Republic of Haiti occupies the western, smaller portion of the island of Hispaniola. It is the third largest country in the Caribbean, behind Cuba and the Dominican Republic, occupying a total area of 10,714 square miles. Its capital is Port-Au-Prince.

Led by a former slave Toussaint Louverture, Haiti holds the distinction of being the first black led republic in the world. They are the only nation in the western hemisphere to have defeated three European super powers, Britain, France and Spain. In its over 200 year history, contentious politics including 32 coups have dogged Haiti and stifled its economic growth. Add to that the massive earthquake of 2010 that left the country devastated and until today recovery has been slow.

Soccer is Haiti’s most popular sport. In fact, the 1960s through the mid-1970s may be considered Haiti’s golden age in football. Coached by Antoine Tassy, such players like Guy St. Vil, Henri Francillion, Philippe Vorde and Renold Jean Francois made Haiti the envy of the Caribbean. In 1974 they confirmed their status by becoming the first Caribbean country to reach the finals of the FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament at a time when only the best sixteen teams made it to the World Cup finals.
