Barbados

In 2001 Team Barbados USA climbed to the mountain top in the New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament, defeating Team Jamaica USA in the final. Since then the quality of their performance has been disappointing and in fact missed the tournament in 2015. They are back in the 2016 tournament and expect to turn a few heads in the land mark 25th anniversary tournament.

Alittle about the Country:

The island of Barbados is one of the islands of the Lesser Antilles and has a population of a little less than 300,000 people. It gained its independence in 1966 but retained Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State.

Before the English became the permanent colonizers of Barbados, the Spanish and Portuguese were the earliest Europeans to occupy the island.

While Barbados is classified as an Atlantic Island, it is considered to be part of the Caribbean and is ranked as a leading tourist destination.

Barbados is host to four species of nesting turtles, green turtles, loggerheads and leatherbacks, and has the second largest hawksbill turtle breeding population in the Caribbean. “Turtle soup anyone?”

Pop star and Grammy winning artist Rihanna, is a product of Barbados. Also of Bajan origin is hip-hop artist Grandmaster Flash. However, prior to Rihanna and Grandmaster Flash, there were The MerryMen, a calypso band out of Barbados that gained international notoriety. While their unique sound produced several popular songs, their biggest hit was “Big Bamboo”.

Like most British colonies Barbados adopted the sports of their colonizers. Over the years they have produced some of the greatest cricketers in the world including arguably the greatest all-rounder ever in Sir Garfield Sobers. While not producing memorable soccer players, they produced one of the great sprinters in the late 1990s in Obadele Thompson who won an Olympic bronze medal in the 100 metres in Sydney 2000.
