Year Established: 2000 - Team Dominica started playing in the Caribbean Cup in 2005
While Team Dominica USA may not be considered a premier team in the New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament, their play has remained inspirational and in 2015 looked a much better organized group that helped them qualify for the playoffs for the first time in years. With the introduction of younger players, they expect 2016 to be a memorable year.
Alittle about the Country:
One of the smaller islands of the Caribbean, only 290 square miles, and a population of less than 100,000 people. They are nicknamed the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean” for its unspoiled natural beauty. Dominica in Latin means Sunday, is the name given to the island by Christopher Columbus and represents the day he first spotted the island. The capital is Roseau.
Boiling Lake, the world’s second largest hot spring is home to Dominica. They became an independent nation in November 1978.
The Caribbean Sea offshore of the island of Dominica is home to many cataceans, most notably a group of sperm whales that live in this area year round.
The Sisserou parrot, which is featured on their flag, is a rare bird and on the Commonwealth of Dominica protected list.
Dominica has enjoyed more international recognition in cricket than in soccer. They have produced such players as Grayson, Irvine and recently Shane Shillingfords who have all represented the West Indies internationally. While quite recently their native son Emmanuel Nanthan was elected vice president of the West Indies Cricket Board. To date they have not made their mark in soccer at the Caribbean Football Union or CONCACAF levels.
