Week 16 - NY Caribbean Cup Championship Final...

Team Jamaica retain NY Caribbean Cup Championship

After a bruising battle the curtain came down on the 2015 New York Caribbean Cup Championship as Team Jamaica took the long road home in retaining the championship over Team Haiti via PSO, while Team St. Kitts and Nevis tripped up former champions Team St. Lucia 1-0 for third place.

The third place game between Team St. Kitts & Nevis and Team St. Lucia was a clash of the 2015 NY Caribbean Cup Eastern and Western Zone winners.

Both teams started tentatively feeling each other out and seeking to gain control of the midfield. The game was barely nine minutes old when the Sugar Boys struck.

Kicking toward the Flatlands goal, Alister Warner latched on to a long pass down the right side and without hesitation cut inside defender Angus Williams and curled  a lovely left footed shot pass goalkeeper Chad Amari Phillip.

As it turned out that was the only goal of the game. Late in the second half Team St. Lucia’s right fullback John Perry Joseph was noticeably coming forward a little more often obviously trying to create numbers up front for the Lucians as they hunted for the equalizer but as it turned out caused no real damage. In fact, the Sugar Boys apparently scored a second goal but it was waived off by the official for an infraction on goalkeeper Chad Amari Phillip.

This is Team St. Kitts and Nevis’ best finish in the New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Tournament since 2008.

Characteristically Team Haiti took the field late for the Championship game against Team Jamaica causing the Jamaica team management to file a protest for the Haitian’s tardiness. Fortunately Team Jamaica won the game so the protest did not become a factor.

As for the game it was barely seconds old when midfield maestro Jermaine Hue’s deadly accuracy picked out Javid Morris all by his lonesome and he dribbled in on Marc Donald Mervil and beat the custodian to his left to give the NY Reggae Boyz a 1-0 lead.

Following the goal both teams matched attacks and counter attacks and it was on one of the counter attacks that Les Grenadiers equalized.

Going downhill toward Flatlands Avenue goal Louis Robenson out raced Daemion Benjamin to a long outlet pass down the left side and rather than ride Robenson toward the touch line, Benjamin chose to bring him down in the box. It was an unnecessary foul and the official had no alternative but to spot the ball. Jamaican fans, and teammates for that matter, were hoping for some Devon Haughton heroics but that didn’t happen as Alfred Sonthonax stepped up to bury the shot and pull Haiti even.

There was no further scoring in the game as the final whistle sounded with the score Team Jamaica (1) Team Haiti (1).

Haughton saved his heroics for the Kicks from the Penalty Mark (KFPM) saving the first and the fourth penalties, while David Daout missed the fifth for Les Grenadiers that would have put the pressure back on Team Jamaica. That miss set off a wild celebration by Team Jamaica who had just retained the 2015 New York Caribbean Cup Soccer Championship.
